The Golden Compass
This movie is fascinating, nice scenes and special effects. An adventure you wouldn't want to miss.
The story revolves around a girl named Lyra, she possesses a special talent in being able to read 'The Golden Compass'. The compass is absolutely different from the normal compass that we would normally use for navigating the North, South, East and West directions. It contains symbols that the girl could read. And she is able to ask a question, then the compass would tell her the answer in the form of symbols.
The setting is in a parallel galaxy that is almost the same to ours. The people who live in this world, compared to us, have their souls or spirits outside of their bodies, in a form of animals. Yup, quite intriguing, isn't it? You could even talk to your own 'soul creature'.
Lyra has a friend who's a boy and in this movie, she would try to save him from an organization that researches about children.
A certain 'dust', which they believe to be something evil was discovered by her uncle, who is a scientist, and wants to make a trip to that place and study it.
Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman), an officer from the Magisterium, a powerful organization in their place visits the orphanage where Lyra is, and asked the Seniors in that place to accompany her in her journey.
While being with Mrs. Coulter, Lyra discovers that she's not as nice as she thinks she is. And also finds out that she's a part of the organization who's been kidnapping children for research. Even though she was frightened, she manages to escape and meet a group of people called Gyptians. Together, they traveled to the North to look for her friend, and their captured children.
On their journey, they passed through a place like a village, and there, she was able to meet a 'Prince Polar Bear'. This bear agreed to be under the service of Lyra and help her in finding her friend and the other kids.
When they finally arrived on the North, Lyra was kidnapped and brought to the kingdom of the Polar Bears who were wearing armours. She talked to the king and tricked him that she's a soul creature. The prince arrived and had a fight with the king bear.
After the duel, Lyra proceeded to saving her friend. She was able to arrive at the secret organizations research laboratory and was able to meet her friend.
There's a machine that separates the person from their soul animal, which is a terrible thing. Just imagine if you were separated from your own soul/spirit.
And finally, Lyra and the other kids was able to escape and go out of the lab, only to face the army outside. Helpless kids against an army with dogs! Don't worry, help arrives with witches flying and shooting arrows on the soldiers, the armoured polar bear also arrives to save Lyra and the others, plus, the Gyptians who came to save their children.
They were victorious and finally headed home on their flying boat. But somehow, I think that the story doesn't end there. I feel that there's still a Part 2 for this movie in the future.
To wrap it all up, I'd say that this movie is worth watching. It's a really great adventure that I know you'd also enjoy as I did.
