Azumi

One thing that catched my eyes for this movie is the poster of the pretty lady samurai. Yes, you read it right, she's a samurai, in fact, a trained samurai assassin. One of the best in Japan during the era of emperors and battles with swords were the most commonly used weapon. Easily said, if you don't know how to handle a sword at that time, you'll be easily killed.

Going further into the story, it started with a young girl named Azumi who was orphaned that time as her mother was murdered. She was lucky to have survived as merciless warriors devour villages, killing men, women and even children.

At that time, a samurai passed by with children who came along with him. One of the kids offered a hand to her to join them on their travel. At first, Azumi was a bit hesitant as she was crying beside her mother's corpse. But after making a quick and right decision, she accepts the hand, and went on the journey with them.

Years passed by, and the children are now very well trained assassins conducting their usual daily routine of enhancing their skills in the forest. Each of them possessing different specialties in sword, speed, techniques and alertness, enables them to be a really powerful group.

Without knowing their real mission, they waited for the time to be able to go down from the mountain. And finally, one morning, their master told them that they are prepared to leave the place they called home. But their was a condition, everyone must choose a partner, then, kill each other. The one who is left alive, can go with their master.

Everyone, was shocked, and can't believe what they have just heard. Who wouldn't be? If you were in their shoes, and all of you were like a family since you were kids, then suddenly, the master asks of you to kill the one that you chose as a partner.

Splash! The sound of blood was heard from the side, and one of them fell to the ground. And the one who killed that person went inside the hut to meet the master. Totally, their were 10 of them, which means that there's still four pairs to go. All of them must fight for their life now, or get killed.

The mixed feeling of surprise, fear, sadness and confusion could be seen in their eyes. After a while, another one falls on the ground. A few seconds later, one person drops to the ground. And finally, another one goes down. The remaining pair, Azumi and her best friend looks at each others eyes and talks to each other for the last time.

The man tells her that this is their final meeting, and even though it's hard for them to decide, only one of them must survive in order to follow their master. They drew their swords, and blood was again spilled, her friend bends on his knees. But before he falls, he says his last words to her and gives her his lucky charm.

Six of them, master and five students, left the burning hut of memories and onto their mission.

As they go along their mission, you would be witnessing their different skills. And along the way, one of them falls in love, and most of them loose their lives.

Further more, Azumi almost got raped as she dressed up wearing a kimono, but was forced to defend herself and her new found friend.

I'd say that this is one movie that you'd really want to watch, especially if you're looking for samurai warriors, sword action and a really great adventure. It is a japanese movie, so I'd suggest getting a DVD to be able to read the sub-title in english. But if you are fluent in japanese or could at least understand, then perhaps a CD would be enough.

do you know what the luckycharm in Azumi is? I was given one of these stones by a girl from Japan when I was travelling but don't know what it means.
