A Single Man Trailer
Well well well isn't this interesting? The two trailers for this film, one which came out a few months ago and one that came out within the past 2 days shows the difference between an accuately representative trailer and one that is clearly being primed for the Oscars in a completely unsubtle way. The new trailer also edits out any of the homosexual activity going on. Classy. Real classy.
We are all used to seeing trailers that are primed for the Oscars. However to see one trailer released months ago functioning as a regular trailer and to see the same trailer tweaked to become more accessible by taking out all the homosexual bits and by tacking on very blunt and very obvious quotes that not only praise the film but mention Oscar constantly. Quotes within trailers is not a new thing and many times it really works but to see the Weinstein Company trying so hard to get people thinking about this as an Oscar movie and then added on to that, its not even represented accurately.
All in all though when it comes down to it the film looks incredible. Just a bevy of images and splashes of color. The film also takes place in one day which happens to be November 30th which happens to be my birthday! I must wholly concure with the reminders of Almodovar's Broken Embraces trailer that Ryan Adams on awardsdaily brings up. While there is still a hint of gay in the trailer it is very upsetting that they toned it down to the degree they did and made very concious cuts from the first trailer. Oscar voters are going to see the film regardless so what is the point? I guess maybe it is for the general public? I guess so. It is a combination of both. I guess two men kissing in a trailer that could potentially be tacked onto a few mainstream films is just too much for people at this point? Which is ridiculous. You would think we were a bit past this. But since my father had no idea that homosexual activity was ever even shown in films and was of course not approving of it it sort of shows how unaware people can be to what is going on in film today and what has been for quite some time. There are many others out there like that as well who have no idea that these things are not being seen as taboo by some anymore. Oh well. We have a long way to go. I guess we can rejoice that at least there is a hint of gay in this trailer still. Not much of one but it is slightly there.
Anyways this looks like my kind of film completely. This is totally my thing. Wondering why the production design looks so awesome? Probably not but I will tell you anyways that the production designer from Mad Men Dan Bishop is also the production designer here. From the looks of it this is definite Oscar material and that means that he should deservedly be nominated. Let us hope.
Here are the two trailers up for comparison. I am so unbelievably excited for this film.

The second.. wow. The oh so subtle decisions to leave out the part with the two of them on the bed and the reflective kissing scenes.. that's the trailer we'd see at your average multiplex. Amazing how the Oscar machine works, huh? Do they think they can hide the film's subject matter for ever? "Ah, what the hell", they think. Let's milk it as much as we can for conservative filmgoers. *barf*
Still so excited though.. looks like this film is right up my alley too.
